The vision for Woodhall Drive was to create contemporary and desirable family homes hallmarked by the quality of their design. Woodhall Drive is located on the site of a former disused single-storey pitched roof community hall; sitting on the gently sloping corner site of Juniper Green. Consisting of four, five-bedroom townhouses, each offers 1,800 sq. ft. accommodation comprising of an expansive open plan living, kitchen dining area with large areas of glazing opening onto the south facing garden. The surrounding properties vary vastly in aesthetic with a mix of private semi-detached and detached homes, which provided LBA with an opportunity to design a unique and contemporary development for developers Glencairn Properties. The quality of the architectural design of Woodhall Drive has resulted in the properties unique character that is progressive for its time.
The form of each house is a ‘stepped block’, with the first and second floor volume offset and pushed-out to create a ‘floating’ overhang to the front elevation creating a semi-covered parking area. The offset rear creates a 1st floor roof terrace on top of the projecting open-plan Kitchen / Dining / Living space volume on the ground floor. The roof terrace above, framed by a sedum blanket green roof, is accessible from the 1st floor living space with frameless glass balustrades allowing uninterrupted views of the individual south-facing rear gardens and out over the rooftops to the Pentland Hills.
External finishes of the properties feature Wienerberger Marziale brick. The textured light buff coloured brick has been used to retain the feel of a traditional clay brick, however, the variation in both texture and colour of the brick separates the development as innovative and contemporary.
The façade has been carefully detailed to set it apart from its counterparts. Set amongst the buff coloured brick, the vertical strips of curtain wall glazing, to both front and rear elevations, visually separate each of the houses. The bronze finished aluminium windows compliment the brick giving a dramatic effect to the exterior. The glazing not only complements the brick but allows the occupants to view the brickwork from the inside the house through strategic voids – seamlessly tying the internal and external design together.
When the sun hits the development in the early afternoon, the Marziale brick appears to almost shimmer in the light. Maintaining the vibrance of the brick well into the evening, LED ground up-lights light all external areas showcasing the brickwork in a new setting.
The Marziale brick at Woodhall drive was crucial to the developments success. LBA created a contemporary and forward-thinking design for Glencairn Properties by applying what is considered to be a traditional material in a contemporary setting. The aesthetic of the Marziale brick allows the development to respond well to its setting and make a significant contribution to the neighbourhood, rather than an imposing massing that detracts from its surrounds.
