Archerfield walled garden
The proposals for Archerfield Walled Garden were to seek to alter and extend the existing facilities, as part of a five year growth plan for the estate. The vision for the development was to create a flexible venue, which connected the existing building to the garden, providing a community space to support the wide variety of events hosted by the venue. Proposals included internal refurbishments, upgrading the existing facade, a Glasshouse, and a new events space.
Interpreting the client’s brief, it was intended that the design will ensure a timeless, high quality destination visitor attraction and a sustainable legacy for Archerfield Estate.
LBA were first appointed to carry out a feasibility study to explore the opportunities to alter and expand the existing facility within the walled garden as part of a 5 year plan. The already successful facility included the walled garden, café, brewery and other local retail, alongside running a number of events across the year. The brief for the development was to create a flexible venue, which connects the existing building to the garden, providing a community space to support the wide variety of events hosted by the venue. The proposals include internal refurbishments to improve the café, creating a new garden and homewares retail area with produce from local businesses, creating a new flexible venue space which connects to the garden and strengthens ties to the garden. The proposals also include a new glasshouse which was sensitively detailed to sit against the listed wall.
A progressive approach was taken to ensure the design is high quality, timeless and encourages a holistic garden experience within the A Listed walled garden and existing structures. The vision for the development at Archerfield Walled Gardens was to ensure that the proposal achieve the following key client aspirations, which were; Identity, Experience and Legacy. The final design connects the existing established features of the site which were disparate and now integrated with the formal gardens forming a holistic experience. The proposal was designed to respect and respond to key views and the established axis/pathways within the Walled Garden.
