St Andrews west
The vision for St Andrews West has evolved over many years. With a long-term commitment to the town and community, the desire to deliver an exemplar for new urban development is at the forefront of our ambitions. The focus has been on creating a well-considered residential development, pushing the boundaries of the housing market, and ensuring the houses and amenities are enjoyable spaces to live, on an everyday basis. The scheme is strongly connected to green networks, resilient and future proofed, reflecting the changes in which people live today, and looking ahead to the future.
The development of the first phase of development at St Andrews West forms a residential mix of 98 houses, apartments, and flats. The proposals include 34 new terraced houses ranging from 2 to 2.5 storeys, 27 low-rise fishers units, a locally inspired typology based on fishermen’s cottages, and a variety of flatted units totalling 37 units ranging from 3 to 3.5 storeys, together with community gardens, external stores, car parking, podium garden and landscaping.
The designs have been developed through detailed analysis of both St Andrews and the wider East of Fife, both informing and inspiring the design proposition in a variety of means. An understanding of the historic place to inform the contemporary means that there is a legibility and familiarity of the built forms and urban layout in the proposals. Above all, the understanding of the sensitivities of placing a new contemporary development on the outskirts of such a historic town has driven the requirements for a referential design based on a deep level of understanding of local context.
The landscape design has played an important role from the outset and a generous green corridor connects the neighbourhoods, green networks and provides a gathering and play space for the central residents. The integrated landscape strategy alongside the movement strategy that give priorty to walking and cycling over the car has created permeability and defined and given character to the spaces. Throughout we have reduced the visual impact of the car on the streetscape through podium parking, building design and visual screening.

“The landscape team at WA have been working alongside LBA to develop an exciting new community in St Andrews. The development puts placemaking and sustainability at the core of the designs, with a strong focus on the landscape and how it is hugely influential in creating a people focussed place. People priority streets connect with a green corridor through the site, incorporating community grow spaces, natural play, and social space.
“The design process has been fun and collaborative, with innovative and exciting design as the top priority. We are looking forward to turning these aspirational designs into a reality with LBA”
