Edinburgh Street Food
Edinburgh Street Food brings global cuisines under one roof in central Edinburgh, with innovative kitchens that take guests on a culinary journey around the world.
The food hall is open seven days a week, and aims for greater diversity and visitor numbers than any other comparable project in the country.
The interior of the food hall has been designed to create a visual spectacle with lighting and decorations inspired by markets across the world, with neon signs, textiles and structural art. By bringing many food concepts together in a single area, we hope to capture the public’s imagination and transport them around the world using different flavours.
The brief was driven by the client’s design concept, based on other successful businesses, Silk Road Street Food & Silk Road Restaurant, both based in Oslo, and by the emerging demand from modern consumers for a new kind of dining concept. ESF contains 8 separate food vendors, as well as 2 bars, in an urban and colourful environment. The concept of informal communal dining is a growing sector, with a reputation for being fun and fast moving. The lively atmosphere and multiple options offered creates a more social communal dining experience than the traditional restaurant environment. Edinburgh Street Food acts as a melting pot, bringing all types of people together regardless of their culinary interest, dining preferences, by literally offering ´something for everyone´.
Part of the scope of works included improvements to the front entrance to maximise the frontage onto Leith Walk, increasing the visibility to passing pedestrians as well as potential visitors traveling past in vehicles. As there is a greater footfall from Princes Street/Leith Street down towards Leith Walk then past the south facade of the Omni centre this front entrance was a key area part of the landlord works.
