Meadowfield terrace
The development consists of six new semi-detached properties within the substantial garden plot of Cairn Lodge. Across the 6 plots, there are two house types which offered a 3-bed and a 4-bed family home that respond to the surrounding built context in a contemporary manner whilst respecting the setting of the Category B Listed Lodge.
The living accommodation is located to the ground floor of the property with the kitchen connecting to the rear private garden. There is then a generous living and dining space connected to the kitchen spanning the remaining length of the property. The sleeping accommodation is in the upper floors and included internal fitted wardrobes within each bedroom.
The new dwellings are envisaged to be a positive addition to this residential area of Duddingston. The proposed style, form and materials have been selected to offer a contemporary aesthetic using high quality durable materials whilst sympathetically responding to neighbouring properties with a tonally harmonious material palette.
The materials of the surrounding properties are not consistent however, we took inspiration from the local context which resulted in Meadowfield Terrace being constructed of a render and brick finish, with timber clad feature panels. We were very specific with the tone of the brick, as we were keen for it to mimic the colour of the stone which is common within some of the surrounding houses. The use of render and slate, seeks to respond to materials which are used widely in the neighbouring properties. Areas of timber are used to articulate key moments in the elevations
