SEAMAB
Seamab is a charity that provides care and education for children and young people from across Scotland who have more complex needs and require specialised intensive support. Up to 21 children currently attend Seamab school and up to 15 of those children are supported in residential placements across 3 bungalows about a mile away from the school.
The existing school is in a converted single storey house that is both outdated and unsuited for its intended use. It is in a poor state of repair and as such is proposed for demolition to allow for the construction of a more suitable, aspirational, and inspiring premises on a site adjacent to the current footprint.
The proposal is for a new, purpose built school building and surrounding external facilities comprising of a two storey volume consisting of staff accommodation and gym hall, and a connected single storey building predominantly comprising teaching spaces. Soft and hard landscaping is proposed to the site along with dynamic and natural play areas, a multi-use games area and on-site parking.
LBA were approached by Chris Stewart, Chair of the charity’s Board of Trustees, to join a team of consultants for the design and construction of the new school. LBA has been responsible for the architectural design of the school and for taking the project through to Planning approval which was awarded in February 2022. With planning permission granted, the charity has £4m funding in place with building work started late 2024 and due to complete late 2025. The new school will be a physical launchpad for children to believe in their potential and build a future which once might never have been imaginable to them.
